GLOW founder, Sara, talks about the pros and cons of hair removal, and dispels some myths along the way.

How does waxing work?

Waxing is quick and easy. The hair follicle is pulled out of its root so the unwanted hair is removed leaving skin silky smooth.  Perfect for those bare legs and strappy summer dresses.

Which wax?

“I can’t stress this enough, wax is not just wax!” says Sara.

“At GLOW we only use the very best, and after much research choose Lycon Wax. It’s a natural Australian resin, used with a pre-wax oil to protect the skin, making it ideal for sensitive areas and skin.”

Sara explains, “I can’t sing the praises of Lycon Wax enough. When new waxing clients come to GLOW they are amazed by our waxing: I think it’s the combination of great technique and product – we only let very, very, very skilled therapists wax!”

Using the very best quality wax, also reduces inflammation and redness, and causes much less irritation to the skin.

“Many clients tell us Lycon waxing is virtually pain-free and the best wax they have ever tried. If you’ve not used Lycon before then I think you’ll be seriously impressed.”

Glowing words…

“I have never felt comfortable going for a wax but that was before I went to Glow in Chester I have now been twice and feel very relaxed. The ladies are very well mannered and make you feel very relaxed I can’t recommend this place highly enough the service they give is second to none; nothing is too much trouble and it’s a pleasure going there.”

Ingrown hair

Waxing can lead to ingrown hairs. These are hairs which do not emerge from the follicle, but remain embedded in the skin, often causing inflammation and soreness.

They can occur after waxing as dead skin cells accumulate and form a papule as the skin heals. A hair just starting to grow back can get trapped under the papule and can’t emerge from under the skin.

“I really rate Decleor’s Post Hair Removal Cooling Gel,” says Sara. “It’s one of GLOW’s best sellers, and rightly so. Clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of ingrown hairs and reduce hair re-growth – it really works!”

With Clove and Chamomile Essential Oils to provide an instant soothing effect Post Hair Removal Cooling Gel (£26.00 125ml) is brilliant for daily use on the face, body, and delicate and intimate areas.

And it’s not just for waxing clients; it works a treat for all hair removal methods, even after shaving.

Looking after your skin between waxing

Your mantra should be: exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate!

Regular exfoliation is essential to remove dead skin cells and lift potential in-growing hairs. “I’m a massive fan of our Korean mitts (just £4.95) which are amazing for exfoliating, and always have a pair in the bathroom,” explains Sara.

Moisturise daily too as if your skin is soft the hair will re-grow with less irritation.

“My favourite right now is the new Decleor Cica-Botanic balm to smooth, repair and protect,” says Sara. “Its key ingredient, Eucalyptus Essential Oil, is proven to reduce inflammation, fight infection and hydrate the skin and let the skin heal itself, naturally.”

Waxing while pregnant

“Waxing while pregnant is completely safe for both mum and baby,” confirms Sara. “But you may notice that hormonal changes cause your hair to grow thicker, darker and in places it’s never been before!”

The increased blood flow, especially to the pubic area, can make you more sensitive to pain, and some mums-to-be may find waxing more painful than previously.

Our highly trained and experienced therapists understand the techniques and positions which are best for pregnant woman, especially ones in their third trimester.

We are happy and confident to wax expectant mums right up to their due date, and many clients prefer being hair free ready for their labour, as it makes them feel clean and comfortable, and also helps when it comes to post-treatment care and recovery.

Men’s waxing

Waxing is a frequently requested service from our male clients, and you can see why – it’s quick, easy and inexpensive.

Face, chest or back hair can be swiftly and completely removed, and our Lycon wax and skilled therapists ensure the “ouch” factor is minimal.

Always remember we’re delighted to book a consultation with one of our highly experienced therapists. We discuss your concerns, assess your needs and advise you on how best to remove unwanted hair. We offer specialist hair removal treatments for both men and women.

Laser Hair Removal

Our latest technology (available only at GLOW Chester) offers an alternative to traditional waxing.

Sara recommends, “If you’re prone to ingrown hairs then I believe laser hair reduction is the perfect solution for you.”

Laser hair removal works by penetrating the skin to target the hair shaft and destroy the follicle. Your unwanted hair is permanently removed. It usually takes just 6 to 8 sessions and the result is a permanent reduction of unwanted hair. Laser removal doesn’t damage the dermis so even those with sensitive skin can be treated.

IPL is brilliant for summer time as you can shave between sessions – but you do need to avoid the sun before and after. Call Chester 01244 348483 to arrange an initial consultation with one of our specialists.
